The Menger Hotel, San Antonio, Texas

Famous for being where Theodore Roosevelt gathered his Rough Riders, The Menger Hotel is another bit of San Antonio history to behold.  It’s right next door to the Alamo, and it’s been on my list for some time to stop in for one drink at the fabled Menger Bar.  I told Steve if we made it there on this trip, I may just…

F.I.S.H., San Antonio Riverwalk, TX

There’s a work of art that’s so unique, it became an instant classic when Donald Lipski installed it under a freeway overpass, over San Antonio’s Riverwalk back in 2009.  F.I.S.H. draws crowds from all walks of life.  We visited during the day, and from what I hear, it’s really spectacular at night when the fish are all lit.  It’s already on my list for…

The Pearl, San Antonio, Texas

There’s something great going on in San Antonio.  New developments, and redevelopment of old places.  The Pearl  is going to be one of the best examples I’ve ever seen of reinventing an industrial area.  It’s still in development, and so far there’s fantastic shops, amazing eateries, a Culinary Institute of America campus, and an amazingly unique place, the Hotel Emma.  It’s on what’s…

The Granary Restaurant at The Pearl, San Antonio, Texas

We arrived at The Pearl in time for lunch, and chose The Granary mostly because it was right where we parked.  I did a little homework, and we wouldn’t have gone wrong most any place we chose.  The Granary has a casual vibe, but it’s pricey.  We were shocked to pay over $50 for a lunch of two plates and two beers.  That’s…

El Mercado, “Market Square”, San Antonio, TX

Historic El Mercado was very quiet during our visit, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  It’s easy to imagine strolling musicians, and crowds buzzing about.   The square is lined with shops and restaurants, most notably, Mi Tierra Cafe and Bakery.  This place looks like Christmas year-round.  Sparkly decorations and lights cover the ceiling, framed bits of history adorn the walls,…

Exploring Riverwalk, San Antonio, Texas

Since we’ve been to San Antonio Riverwalk a couple times before, we decided to enter from a different direction, and oh my goodness, how this place has grown.  There’s still the familiar sights, but the expansion had us all turned around.  We gave up trying to figure out where we entered on our previous trips, and just took it all in. First…

San Antonio, Texas, RV Park

We stayed at Traveler’s World RV Park while in San Antonio.  I wanted to find a nice, secure, well-appointed park to stay at that was close to downtown, and this place fit the bill quite nicely.  The office staff were friendly, There were groundskeepers constantly grooming, and maintenance guys buzzing about.  We’d recommend this place for sure.  While we weren’t going…

Thankfully, the Long Days are Done! San Diego to Texas

Hello San Antonio!  It’s been three days since we’ve left San Diego. Each day we have endured 7+ hours on the road. It’s always that way if we are traveling any further than New Mexico via I-10. It’s totally worth the few long days of vast desert, because now that it’s in our rearview mirror for this trip, we can…

For Old Time’s Sake, Sonora, TX

We stopped for lunch at a place that holds fond memories for us.  The last time we ate at this little Mexican restaurant we were traveling with Steve’s dad and mom, Dick and Marlene, and Auntie Glenda and Uncle Barry (Dick’s brother and his wife). La Mexicana Restaurant is in Sonora, Texas, another small town with good folks. and the timing is right…

Tucson, AZ to Van Horn, TX

Van Horn, Texas.  It’s a small town smack-dab in the middle of Texas no-where-land when heading east on I-10.  Up bright and early to leave Tucson for a long day on the road, we were prepared for the stretch of highway that lie ahead.   There’s a tourist trap that claims to be at the Continental Divide. Let it be…
